Acrylic Paints: Which One Should I Use?

With various acrylic paints available for crafting, you may wonder which acrylic paint should you be using.

Well, it all depends on the type of surface you will be painting. From paper to glass to wood to metal, we break down the different types of acrylic paints to help you choose the best paint for your project.



1. Delta Soy Paint
Soy Paint is the first true "green" decorative paint using pigment containing a bio-based soy ester resin and other recycled materials. It can be used on most porous surfaces for arts, crafts, and home decor projects such as:
  • Paper
  • Canvas
  • Terracotta
  • Plaster
  • Wood
Great coverage and color, non-toxic, and dries in 15 minutes. 

2. DecoArt Patio Paint
Patio Paint is a permanent, weather and water resistant acrylic paint for outdoor decorating. Use on surfaces such as:
  • Terracotta
  • Concrete

  • Stucco

Crystal Gloss Enamels is a transparent, non-toxic paint dries with crystal clear color. Ideal for glass, glazed ceramics, and most smooth surfaces, such as:

  • Glazed Ceramics

  • Decorative Plates
  • Wine and Drink Glasses (outside surface)
Allow to air dry for 48 hours or bake in oven for 30 minutes at 200 °F in non-preheated oven. Allow project to cool with oven door open. Before applying paint, clean glass surface with hot, soapy water or rubbing alcohol.

Ceramcoat is a premium quality, creamy acrylic paint that is non-toxic and has excellent coverage can be used on:

Dries in 15 minutes.

6. Americana Acrylic Paint

Apply two coats, one vertically and one horizontally. Dry one hour in between coats and let paint cure for 24 hours.

    1. We are not sure how well that would work. You could test it out to see, but otherwise, you may want to use a matte sealer.

    1. You would have to use paint or a sealant that is food safe. Any paint or sealant you use must indicate it is food safe before applying to any dishes, cups, etc. for consuming.

  4. I have been asked to make large reproductions of some Dr. Seuss books for a children's reading. I am thinking of painting the large poster sized foam-boards. What would be the best paint to use?

    The problem I've had in the past using some acrylics is that I have to go over the same area multiple times to get that nice vibrant look.

    What paint would give me this look without having to coat several times?

  5. Can someone tell me if there is a paint out there that I can used on glass or plastice that will give me a stain glass look . I have heard that the Glass Paint Gloss Opaque works but you have to bake and wait 21 days well I want something that drys fast I dont want to go thru all that so can someone help. Thanks

  9. I started painting rocks to hide as something to do during safer at home. I have Craftmart paints I bought in Florida. I need more and am thinking a different brand might be thicker and denser in color? Which of your paints would you suggest? Glad you have curbside pick up! Miss you!
